Organized by Fairchild Television, and co-organized by Talentvision, AM1430 Fairchild Radio, and PLE Magazine, the Grand Finale of Those Years・These Songs Singing Contest Season 3 was successfully held on June 29th at the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto.
Contestant No. 6 Emily Wang delivered outstanding performances of “I Surrender” and “Unparalled in the World”, earning high praises from the judging panel. With a beautifully expressive tone and consistently strong vocal skill, she was crowned Champion and recipient of the Golden Voice Award, demonstrating remarkable artistry and exceptional stage capability. The First Runner-up and Second Runner-up titles were awarded to No. 10 Rico He and No. 8 Frank Zhou respectively. No.2 Quin Lam received the Audience Favourite Award.
The judging panel for this year comprised renowned composer William Wu, acclaimed singer Angela Fong, and singer-songwriter Laird YT Zhou, CA Alexis Yam served as the official auditor. Moreover, the event was hosted by a fresh emcee lineup featuring Fairchild Television variety show host and Fairchild Radio AM1430 DJ Albert Cheung and Rick Lam, joined by Natalie So, the 2024 Miss Chinese Toronto First Runner-up and Fairchild Television program host. Adding to the excitement, local singers Kenneth Wu and Winona Xu delivered spectacular performances, captivating the audience and elevating the atmosphere to its peak.

The Grand Final was structured into two rounds. In the first round, the 10 contestants performed individually in solo order. The second round unfolded through duet performances, with No.1 Julie Wang and No.3 Rayna Zhou performed “Super Star”, conveying unwavering support and protection, and highlighting a heartfelt expression of deep friendship opening the segment. No.2 Quin Lam and No.4 Dora Lin followed with “This Love”, portraying the growth and reflection that emerge through separation. No.5 Ethan Xu and No.6 Emily Wang presented “Black Black Heart”, offering contrasting perspectives on love from both male and female viewpoints. No.7 Jaylok Tsang and No.9 Julie Yu then performed “Proud of You / Girl Who Has Spread Her Wings To Fly”, expressing gratitude and appreciation for their families. No.8 Frank Zhou and No.10 Rico He concluded the second round with the inspirational classic “Sekai ga Owaru Made wa”, delivering a passionate performance that embodied perseverance, youthful energy, and the determination to pursue dreams without giving up.
Following the two rounds of competition, the Top 5 finalists were announced as No.4 Dora Lin, No.6 Emily Wang, No.8 Frank Zhou, No.9 Julie Yu, and No.10 Rico He. The finalists then performed a series of classic television drama and film songs designated by the organizing committee. Through a selection of well-loved melodies, they transported the audience back to cherished cinematic and television moments of the past, allowing everyone to relive and appreciate these treasured memories once again.

Champion Emily Wang delivered an exceptional performance marked by strong vocal technique and refined artistry. She battled with “I Surrender”, a piece widely regarded for its high level of vocal difficulty, and delivered a compelling interpretation distinguished by rich emotional expression and solid technical execution, effectively highlighting her vocal capability and interpretative depth. Progressing into the Top 5 stage, she maintained strong momentum with a highly controlled and expressive rendition of “Unparalled in the World”, the opening theme of the 2006 wuxia romance drama The Return of the Condor Heroes. Despite multiple key changes, her performance remained composed and well-balanced, while her nuanced use of humming passages added lyrical sensitivity. The overall interpretation vividly conveyed the poignant and tragic love story between the protagonists, leaving a strong emotional resonance with the audience.

The First Runner-up Rico He delivered a closing performance in the second-round Top 5 showdown with a heartfelt rendition of “Love Letter”. From the very first note, he immediately transported the audience back to memories of love and heartbreak, offering a delicate and sincere interpretation that fully conveyed the complexity of romantic emotions.

While for the second Runner-up Frank Zhou moved the audience with his emotionally charged performances of “Love In A Life Time” and “New Endless Love”. His sincere delivery resonated deeply with the audience, evoking a strong emotional response and creating a rich atmosphere of nostalgia throughout the venue.

Opening segment was led by rising vocal talents Richard Wang, Ann Chau, and the Champion of Those Years・These Songs S2, David Yuen, who joined the 10 contestants in transporting the audience back to iconic eras of music and culture. The performance journeyed through representative scenes of the 1980s disco era, the 1990s Hong Kong Coliseum stage atmosphere, and the 2000s Causeway Bay street culture, culminating in a powerful opening rendition of “VIVA LIVES”.

Guest performers Kenneth Wu and Winona Xu further elevated the evening with a series of captivating performances, including “Beauty and the Beast”, “Karaoke Men”, “Creation”, “Yue Lang Disco”, and “Red Sun”. Their diverse interpretations showcased a rich spectrum of musical styles, resonating deeply with themes of life and dreams.The competition atmosphere remained highly energetic throughout the night, as all 10 contestants delivered strong vocal performances and sincere emotional expression. Their voices intertwined nostalgia and sentiment, highlighting the powerful emotional resonance and stage artistry of music, and bringing this season’s competition to a successful and memorable close.
